Panasonic has announced a new ruggedized detachable laptop. The Toughbook 20 is a durable hybrid notebook that allows users to detach the touchscreen to use as tablet, according to a press release.
The device is the newest model in the company’s Toughbook series of laptops, which are designed to withstand the harsh environments first responders often work in. The Toughbook 20 comes equipped with 6th Generation Intel Core vPro processor technology, 128 GB SSD 8GB RAM and a choice of Windows 10 Pro or Windows 7.
In addition to use as a standard ruggedized laptop, the device can be used in six other modes, including as a standalone tablet or flipped 180-degrees in ‘presentation mode’ to show an audience content on the screen. The 3.9 pound laptop has a built-in handle to allow for carrying or for the device to be hung on a wall. The handle can also be used as a kickstand to increase the Toughbook’s stability while on a desk. ‘Vehicle mode’ allows for full functionality and operation of the device while moving.
The Toughbook is designed to meet MIL STD-461F standards for electromagnetic interference and MIL-STD-810G standards for drops, shocks, vibrations, sand, rain and humidity. The magnesium alloy case is water and dustproof.
The 10.1” screen includes gloved multi-touch capabilities and is compatible with a waterproof stylus included with purchase. The backlit keyboard is 16 percent larger than the Toughbook 19.
The laptop comes with a 2 megapixel webcam and has an option for an 8 megapixel rear camera. Along with the regular 2600mAh battery, an optional second battery in the keyboard dock can be swapped between the tablet and keyboard for double the battery life.
Additional add-ons include a serial port, magstripe reader, 1D/2D capable barcode reader, GPS, insertable SmartCard readers, fingerprint readers and a 4G LTE carrier modem.
The device includes lock slots designed to insure all components of the laptop are secure.
The device will be available in February 2016. Prices start at $3,099 and include a three-year limited warranty.
