LOS ANGELES — Police said a mother who did not have custody rights to her son allegedly kidnapped him from school and led officers on a pursuit with him in the car.
Nisha Burnett was approached by police and questioned after picking up her son West, 6, from school, KABC reported. She then led officers on a high-speed pursuit, and at one point told the news crew “I have my son. Please, I didn’t kidnap him.”
The pursuit ended when Burnett exited her vehicle at a Harley Davidson store with her son in her arms and ran into the store.
Police recovered the boy safely and Burnett was taken into custody. West was released to his father and aunt who said they were afraid that “she was just having that moment where, ‘If I can’t have him, nobody can.’”
A relative told KABC Burnett suffers from a mental illness and is on drugs. A restraining order has barred Burnett from contacting her son for two years due to “possible endangerment of the child.”
It’s unclear what charges Burnett faces.
