QUINCY, Mass. — A police chase that started in Quincy ended with a crash on Interstate 93 in Boston during rush hour yesterday, injuring two police officers and the suspect, and backing up traffic for miles.
Quincy police initially tried to stop the male suspect, whom they would not identify, near Dorchester and East Squantum streets at about 6 p.m. when he fled, officials said. It was not immediately clear why the man was being stopped.
Six Quincy police cruisers, as well as State Police, pursued the suspect until he crashed into at least one of the Quincy cruisers near Exit 18 on I-93 north, officials said.
Two Quincy police officers suffered minor injuries, and the suspect also was being treated for injuries, officials said. It was unclear where they were being treated.
Witnesses said the man struggled with police officers who tried to break the car’s windows to get him out.
The man attempted to run, but officers were able to arrest him, said one witness who declined to give his name.
The witness said that more than a dozen police cruisers descended upon the scene soon after the crash.
Traffic was brought to a crawl by the crash, as portions of the northbound lanes of I-93 were shut down for about two hours while police worked to reconstruct the incident.
At one point, traffic was backed up about 3 miles to Exit 13, according to SmarTraveler.
