ALTON, Texas — About 50 fraternity brothers in South Texas face disciplinary action after they shot long guns during an off-campus outing and caused a late-night standoff with police.
Police in Alton were called to a ranch after midnight Thursday after neighbors heard several shots. Officers then heard more gunshots, leading them to call for help.
The group didn’t surrender when police shouted out instructions over a loudspeaker. So about 25 officers entered the ranch. Inside were about 50 members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The group surrendered two shotguns and a rifle, and no shots were fired at police. Four people admitted to firing the weapons and were cited for disorderly conduct.
Police Chief Enrique Sotelo says he’s grateful no one was hurt.
