SAN FRANCISCO — A woman who sped away Monday when a San Francisco police officer tried to pull her over on Interstate 280 drove into a light pole and died, authorities said.

The incident began at 12:45 p.m. when the motorcycle officer tried to stop the woman at the Monterey Boulevard off-ramp, police said. The woman, who was driving a Honda CR-V sport utility vehicle, stopped but then drove away when the officer got off his motorcycle.

The officer followed the SUV, but did not start a pursuit or sound his siren, police said. The Honda got off at San Jose Avenue and crashed into a pole on the 1300 block of San Jose.

The driver was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she died, said police Sgt. Wilfred Williams. Her name was not immediately released.
