CORTE MADERA, Calif. — A 25-year-old Corte Madera man with a semi-automatic handgun who, according to police scanner transmissions wanted to “protest his concerns” with the Bank of America, took nine hostages — and then released them — during a bizarre five-and-a-half-hour standoff Monday at the bank’s branch at 663 Tamalpais Ave. in Corte Madera.

According to police scanner transmissions, the suspect set his gun down on a table inside the bank and came out with his hands up just after 10 p.m. At one point during the standoff, the man told negotiators that the gun was a BB gun, according to scanner transmissions.

The man has some sort of mental illness and hasn’t taken his medication, said Twin Cities Police Chief Todd Cusimano. His sister was brought to the scene by negotiators, so she could communicate with him via phone.
