LINCOLN COUNTY, Colo. — A deputy used his patrol car to stop a wrong-way driver from striking other motorists on an interstate over the weekend.

Lincoln County Deputy Michael Hutton, who was shot three times last year while on duty, tried to get the driver’s attention several times before making the decision to put his vehicle between the driver and other motorists.

“I thought about my family, my unborn child on the way in about a month, and I had a duty to preserve life and, in this case, that took over,” Hutton told 9News.com. “I thought I need to put an end to this before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.”

The wrong-way driver, a 58-year-old woman, had apparently suffered a medical episode and suffered minor injuries, police said. An investigation remains ongoing.

“I don’t think twice about what I need to do to protect other people,” Hutton continued.
