HONOLULU — Honolulu police say an on-duty police officer has fatally struck a man in a wheelchair.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the officer was transporting two teenage boys in his patrol car when he struck the man Friday night in Kalaeloa.
Police say the 44-year-old man was not in a crosswalk, and there were no street lights on the stretch of road where he was hit. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The officer, a three-year veteran of the force, was placed on administrative leave pending a negligent homicide investigation into the fatal crash.
