PHOENIX — A Phoenix officer is in critical condition after being involved in a two-vehicle crash.

Phoenix police Sgt. Armando Carbajal told KNXV-TV that the crash happened Thursday afternoon while the officer was leaving a police substation.

“As the officer was exiting to go southbound on Cave Creek, there was a vehicle going northbound, and they collided,” Carbajal said.

The LEO was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. On Thursday evening, Carbajal said the officer remained in “critical but stable condition,” according to the Arizona Republic.

Officials said the officer, who was on duty, was in an unmarked Chevy vehicle at the time of the crash. Impairment doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The 53-year-old officer, who hasn’t been identified, has served 26 years on the force. The other driver and passenger sustained minor injuries.

Additional details about the crash were not immediately released.
