$2.5 Million Award in Police Brutality Case

The New York Times

A state jury in the Bronx, New York City, awarded a disabled Manhattan man $2.5 million yesterday in a case involving his accusations of police brutality nearly two decades ago.

The verdict, before Justice Sallie Manzanet of State Supreme Court, came in the case of Pedro Minaya, who has a brain disorder and is mute. His lawyer, Steven Hoffner, argued that Mr. Minaya’s disabilities came about because “he was manhandled and choked by a police officer” in 1985 in the Bronx after Mr. Minaya, then a livery-cab driver, was pulled over for running a red light.

The $2.5 million award was designated for future medical expenses. Joseph E. Mohbat, representing the city, said the city would consider an appeal.
