Former Top Port Cop Says He Was Fired After Investigating Hells Angels Links

The Associated Press

HALIFAX, Canada (CP) -- A former Ports Canada Police chief has testified that he was fired because of his investigation into possible links between port management and organized crime in Halifax.

CBC radio reported Tuesday that Bruce Brine testified at a human rights hearing into his 1995 dismissal.

The hearing will rule on whether Brine was mentally sound when he signed his work release with the ports police.

The former chief claims he was under intense pressure because he was conducting numerous investigations at the Halifax port. He said the investigations included allegations that senior port officials were involved with members of the Hells Angels.

There were also allegations that port police were taking kickbacks from the motorcycle gang.

Brine argued he was fired because people wanted the investigations halted.

Soon after he was let go, Brine’s files allegedly disappeared.

The former chief had a mental breakdown before he signed his release. He insists he was dismissed without cause.

Brine told the hearing he was later denied a pension with the Ports Canada Police. He claims the dismissal has since prevented him from getting other policing jobs.

His human rights hearing is scheduled to continue Wednesday.
