OLYMPIA - Police using DNA evidence arrested a man and charged him with a 29-year-old murder of a Seattle-area girl, officials said.

Recent DNA evidence from the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab led to the arrest of 55-year-old William E. Cosden Jr. in the November 1973 death of 14-year-old Katherine Devine, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release today.

It is believed to be the oldest DNA murder case in the state, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies today arrested Cosden, who since 1976 has been serving a 48-year sentence for first-degree rape. He is being held in Thurston County Jail.
