Prison aide suspended in 13G theft

By REGINA MEDINA

A deputy prison warden has been suspended after allegedly embezzling $13,000 from a correctional facility in the Northeast, prison officials said yesterday.

Major Joseph J. Glynn Jr., 50, of the city’s Torresdale section, was relieved of his duties Monday and escorted from the prison on State Road in Philadelphia, said prison spokesman Robert Eskind.

Darryl Anderson, the warden of the Alternative and Special Detention program, or ASD, uncovered “some unauthorized withdrawals” on Monday during a monthly audit of an account marked for inmate welfare, Eskind said.

Glynn, with the prison system for 23 years, “said he had written checks for his personal benefit from the account,” Eskind said.

Leon King, commissioner of the Philadelphia Prison System, said Glynn had made the checks out “to himself and signed Anderson’s name” on them, and had intercepted bank statements to hide his misdeeds.

Glynn’s badge, work IDs and keys were confiscated, King said. Glynn was suspended without pay from his $57,000-a-year job yesterday and faces a disciplinary hearing when an internal investigation is completed, King said. If found guilty, he’ll be fired, King said, adding that since Glynn was escorted off the property, “he’s declined to talk to us further.”

King also said that the case has been referred to Philadelphia police, but law-enforcement officials could not provide further information on how they might handle it.
