DALLAS — An assault rifle, ammunition and two Dallas police raid jackets were stolen Tuesday evening from a Dallas police officer’s pickup parked at NorthPark Center.

The pickup was parked near Dillard’s at the North Dallas shopping center while the officer observed training for police recruits, police said. Someone removed the pickup’s door handle and pried open the door to get inside.

More than $5,000 worth of equipment was taken, including two police radios valued at $1,200 each.

Police officials say the officer had followed procedure by leaving the door locked and the weapon out of sight. No suspects have been identified, and none of the stolen items had been recovered Wednesday.

On Feb. 12, a semiautomatic handgun was stolen from a purse inside an officer’s car in a church parking lot in northwest Dallas. In that case, the burglar broke out a rear window to get inside.
