ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Police fatally wounded a man who opened fire on them after a traffic stop and subsequent foot chase, an Arlington police spokeswoman said Sunday night. A second person involved in the traffic stop was still being sought.
Spokeswoman Christy Gilfour said the chain of events began when officers stopped two men for a traffic violation late Sunday afternoon. She said the men fled the vehicle. One of the men carried a rifle, she said.
Gilfour said a police dog located one of the men in a storage space unit and that the man shot at an officer, who returned fire.
“As the officer and the dog approached the suspect, he pointed his handgun at the officers. At that point, the officers did fire. The suspect was shot,” Gilfour said.
The 24-year-old man was taken to a Fort Worth hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Gilfour said the man had a number of outstanding warrants.
Police say the driver, who got away, was carrying a rifle. Authorities say they recovered the rifle but the suspect remains at large.
The officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine adminstrative leave, Gilfour said.
