SEATTLE, Wash. — The King County medical examiner has identified a suspected robber killed by a Des Moines police officer Friday as Edward T. France, 36.
Police confronted France outside the bank after the robbery. France refused to comply when an officer confronted him. The officer used a Taser, but when he wasn’t stopped, the officer shot France once in the chest.
Kent police spokesman Paul Peterson said the officer, a 24-year veteran, believes he shot France -- who did not display a weapon during the bank robbery -- to defend himself. Kent is helping Des Moines police investigate the shooting.
The FBI is investigating whether France, also robbed a Key Bank in Kent on Friday.
A man with a similar description had also been involved in several other Seattle-area bank robberies.
France, who lived in Des Moines, was a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history dating to 1990.
