CHEYENNE - What was supposed to be a simple traffic stop for one police officer Wednesday ended up resulting in a two-car crash between a police cruiser and another car.
Cheyenne Police Chief Bob Fecht said Sgt. Matt Davidson was responding to a traffic stop made by Sgt. Matt Solberg because the driver of the vehicle Solberg was stopping was alleged by a resident to have “brandished a weapon.”
Fecht said the statement made by the resident who reported seeing the weapon “was only an allegation,” he said. “It was simply the case that we had the wrong car.”
As Davidson was responding with lights and sirens to assist the other officer, he collided with a woman driving a red Ford Expedition at Lincolnway and Logan Avenue, Fecht said.
“As Officer Davidson was proceeding through the intersection headed west on Lincolnway, the preliminary investigation shows he was operating his lights and siren when he proceeded through the red light,” Fecht said.
That’s when a woman, who Fecht didn’t have a name for Thursday, was driving northbound on Logan Avenue with a green light in front of her.
Davidson struck her vehicle around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The woman was believed to have been going the 30 mph speed limit.
Fecht said Davidson was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center-West for observation because he had a “stiff neck,” he said.
“It was a fairly severe accident,” Fecht explained. “We may not have had totaled cars, but we may not be able to repair them either.”
