TILLERY, N.C. — Two prison inmates who escaped from a work crew and are suspected of robbing two hunters of their guns were recaptured early Friday in South Carolina.

Cloman Smith and Jesse McCrobie were arrested without incident in Summerville, S.C, after a police officer recognized a pickup truck stolen from the hunters, North Carolina Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree said.

Summerville is home to one of the inmates’ grandmother.

Smith and McCrobie escaped from a work crew at a poultry house Wednesday afternoon, Acree said. They were serving time at the Tillery Correctional Center.

Authorities believe the pair robbed two hunters in Northampton County late that night. They took two rifles, a handgun, cash and a pickup truck, authorities said.

Smith, 30, is serving a maximum prison sentence of 12 years and five months as a habitual felon. McCrobie, 27, is serving a prison sentence of more than three years for larceny, breaking and entering and other charges.
