Ex-Calif. sheriff surrenders to begin prison term

The lawman once dubbed “America’s Sheriff” was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A former California sheriff has turned himself in to a federal prison in Colorado to serve time on a witness-tampering conviction.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons says sheriff Michael Carona surrendered Tuesday morning at the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Littleton, Colo.

He reported to prison shortly before a California hearing that would have set a date for his surrender.

The three-term Orange County lawman once dubbed “America’s Sheriff” was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison.

Carona was indicted in a sweeping public corruption case that included allegations of marital infidelity, cronyism and money-laundering. He was exonerated of other charges.

Carona lost an appeal earlier this year.
