MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. — A man incarcerated and awaiting trial in the 2022 death of an Elwood police officer now faces charges related to an attack on a prison guard this year at Miami Correctional Facility.

The new charges against Carl Boards II of Anderson include attempted murder, a level 1 felony; prisoner possessing a deadly weapon, a level 4 felony; and possession of methamphetamine, a level 6 felony, according to court records.

Boards is charged with murder in the July 31, 2022, death of Elwood police officer Noah Shahnavaz. Investigators say Shahnavaz was shot to death by Boards during a traffic stop in Elwood near Indiana 37 and Madison County Road 1100 North.

The trial in that case is scheduled for January. If convicted, Boards could face the death penalty.

The newest charges against Boards stem from an incident that occurred April 25 inside the Miami prison where Boards was being housed, according to court documents.

Shortly before 5 a.m. that day, investigators say, Boards was seen exiting his unit and approaching a correctional officer, according to court documents. Boards then attacked the officer, striking him repeatedly in the body and face, police said.

Boards was eventually restrained by other prison personnel, and police say the correctional officer was treated at the facility before being transported via Lifeline helicopter to Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital.

During a later interview, the wounded correctional officer told authorities Boards “did not seem like himself” when he emerged from his unit that morning and that he (the officer) was “fighting for his life” as Boards was “trying to kill him.”

The correctional officer also showed investigators a total of five scars on both his shoulders, his left jaw and his right thigh, per court documents.

Boards, reportedly, declined to provide a statement to investigators. His initial hearing on the new charges is slated for 10 a.m. Oct. 7 inside Miami Superior Court 1.
