Police1’s “Got Your Six” list celebrates outstanding advocates who support law enforcement through legislation, philanthropy or community initiatives. This month, we’re proud to highlight Gary Lauder — philanthropist, venture capitalist and member of the Estée Lauder family — whose investments in public safety technology are giving officers cutting-edge tools to solve crimes faster and safer.
Lauder is the managing director of Lauder Partners LLC, a Silicon Valley–based venture capital firm. Since 1985, he has invested in more than 170 private companies, serving on or advising several boards across technology, telecommunications and public safety. His portfolio includes investments in law enforcement and security innovations — including SoundThinking, Lassen Peak and Revelen.ai, whose AI-powered ballistics scanner is being deployed by police departments today. Moreover, his commitment to law enforcement extends beyond investment: Lauder serves on the advisory council of NYU Law School’s Policing Project, which works to ensure policing practices are transparent, effective and aligned with public trust.
Lauder’s support of Revelen.ai has helped bring to market ShotOptix — an AI-powered device the size of a coffee cup that allows officers to scan shell casings on-scene and receive investigative leads in minutes. Instead of waiting weeks or even months for results from backlogged crime labs, investigators can identify links between casings, firearms and prior incidents while still at the scene.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is among the first agencies to adopt the ShotOptix platform. Early results show the potential to double clearance rates for gun crimes without increasing budgets or adding staff.
For officers, the implications are transformative. Imagine finding a shell casing and instantly learning it links to a firearm connected to prior shootings in the area. Instead of waiting months for answers, agencies can act immediately — preventing further violence and giving victims’ families faster closure.
By backing companies that sit at the intersection of technology and public safety, Lauder underscores the role private investment can play in strengthening law enforcement capabilities. His portfolio highlights a commitment to equipping officers with the tools needed to keep communities safe — from faster ballistics analysis to smarter gunshot detection and safer weapon screening.
