FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla.- A gunman shot three people in a hospital parking lot Thursday, killing one before he committed suicide outside a school, officials said.
The two survivors were taken from Baptist Medical Center-Nassau to a hospital in Jacksonville, Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said. He said all four people involved were related and the shootings appeared to have followed a dispute.
“We believe it was domestic. All parties had a relationship,” the sheriff said.
No students were harmed at Emma Love Hardee Elementary School, officials told WJXT-TV in Jacksonville. Seagraves said the gunman shot himself in the parking lot as deputies responded to the scene.
Sandra Loper, a teacher’s aide, said the students were locked into rooms after gunfire was heard outside.
“The front of the school is glass, so I imagine that somebody could have seen it,” she told WJXT.
A school district official had no immediate comment when reached by The Associated Press. A message on the school’s phone said it was closed.
Officials at Baptist Medical Center-Nassau referred calls to the sheriff’s office.
