NEW YORK — Officials announced Thursday that an estimated 70,000 unexamined rape kits sitting in laboratories and evidence collection rooms across the country will be tested with a combined $79 million in federal and New York City funds. The grants, secured with $41 million in federal funds and $38 million from the Manhattan district attorney’s office, will go to 43 jurisdictions in 27 states.
Below are some of the recipients:
Arkansas
The state’s crime lab will receive $97,121 to test 1,513 kits.
California
The Alameda County district attorney’s office will receive $835,830 to test 1,075 kits.
The Contra Costa county district attorney’s office will receive $1,841,535 to test 2,400 kits.
The Riverside police department will receive $433,800 to test 650 kits.
The state’s bureau of forensic services’ DNA laboratory will get $1,606,239 to test 2,000 kits.
Michigan
The state police will get $2 million to test 3,630 kits.
The city of Flint police department will get $163,590 to test 246 kits.
The Wayne County prosecuting attorney’s office will get $1,999,109.
North Dakota
The state attorney general’s crime lab division will receive $341,667 to test 500 kits.
Pennsylvania
The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office will get $254,437 to test 400 kits.
The Philadelphia police department will get $419,788 to test 600 kits.
West Virginia
The state’s police forensic laboratory will get $1,763,281 to test 2,400 kits.
