BOSTON — A young Boston police officer fatally shot herself inside her South Boston apartment last night, a police official said.
Police shut down most of East Sixth Street for much of the evening near the duplex where the shooting occurred but did not release any details or confirm the identity of the officer.
“We are investigating a death,” was all that Superintendent in Chief Robert P. Dunford would say at the scene.
Another police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the victim of the self-inflicted gunshot wound was a young woman who had been on the force for a relatively short time.
Police received a call about the shooting at 8:42 p.m.
A number of top officials from the Boston Police Department visited the scene last night, including Commissioner Edward F. Davis, who comforted and shook hands with officers and investigators.
