GWINNETT COUNTY — A 24-year-old man wanted for murder in Puerto Rico was arrested Tuesday night at a Norcross apartment complex.
The arrest came after Gwinnett deputies and the U.S. Marshal’s Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force received a tip that Jose Berrios-Crespo was staying at Oak Brook Point apartment complex off Pirkle Road, said Gwinnett Sheriff’s spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais.
Berrios-Crespo was wanted for allegedly gunning down a Puerto Rico state police officer’s son on Nov. 22, 2006.
Authorities set up surveillance at the apartments on Tuesday. Bourbonnais said deputies saw Berrios-Crespo get out of a vehicle and enter an apartment.
The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team forced its way inside and arrested him without a fight shortly before 9 p.m.
Bourbonnais said Berrios-Crespo had been staying with an uncle who didn’t know he was wanted. He was reportedly dividing his time between the Norcross apartment and Connecticut.
