PENINSULA, Ohio — Investigators spent much of Wednesday at Brandywine Country Club sorting out what happened there after a man killed himself.
Police went to the golf course on Akron-Peninsula Road about 5:20 a.m. after someone reported criminal damaging.
What happened next is not clear, but a recording of police scanner traffic at the time captured an unidentified officer reporting trouble.
“There was a shot fired, he ran off with my pistol and the shot was fired,” an unidentified officer told a dispatcher. “Send a squad. I don’t know where he is, if he’s hurt, or anything.”
The incident happened at the back of the course near the maintenance garage, the officer told the dispatcher.
“Are you injured?” the dispatcher asked the officer.
“Slight,” he told her.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, said an officer later found a 24-year-old man dead, shot in the head.
The sheriff’s office did not identify any of those involved, but said the man assaulted the officer, hit him in the head and knocked the officer to the ground.
While the officer was semiconscious, the man then removed the officer’s handgun from his holster and ran. A golf course employee who witnessed what happened was helping the officer when both he and the officer heard a shot, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities set up a perimeter to search the golf course and found the man who took the officer’s gun with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General and was later pronounced dead.
The Peninsula officer was treated for minor cuts and released.
A reporter Wednesday left messages for Peninsula police that had not yet been returned Thursday.
