Philly officer accused of on-duty sexual assault

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. — A Philadelphia police officer was arrested Friday and charged with sexually assaulting a man during a road stop.

Michael Paige, an 18-year veteran of the force, pulled over a car in Fairmount Park for an unspecified reason on March 16, police said. He then took one of car’s two male occupants to a secluded area of the park and had “nonconsensual sexual activity” with him, police said.

The man reported the incident to authorities, and an investigation led police to charge Paige, 40, with involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, unlawful restraint and other offenses, Chief Inspector William Colarulo said.

Paige has been suspended from the force with intent to dismiss, police said.

Paige’s lawyer, Gerald S. Stanshine, said the accuser was one of two men in the car Page pulled over, but the men were allowed to drive away and the accuser later returned to the park looking for Page. Stanshine declined further comment on the case.
