JOLIET, Ill. — A Will County judge on Monday set bail at $5 million for a man arrested in what authorities said was an attack on a Joliet police officer Saturday night.

Mario Bolden, 22, of the 300 block of North Bluff Street in Joliet is awaiting charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery to a peace officer, domestic battery, resisting a police officer and obstructing a police officer, said Chuck Pelkie, spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office. The attack occurred about 9:50 p.m. Saturday near Bicentennial Park, 201 W. Jefferson St., Lt. Jeff Allbert said. An officer responding to a call of domestic violence at the park stepped in between Bolden and his girlfriend, who were arguing with each other, officials said.

Authorities said the officer put Bolden up against her squad car, but he picked her up and threw her to the ground. The officer hit her head on the curb and was unconscious by the time officers arrived, authorities said. Police said Bolden was arrested at his home, hiding in a closet.
