CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago police sergeant shot and killed a man who had just shot a fellow patron at a Mount Greenwood bar Sunday evening, police said.

The shootings took place about 6:30 p.m. inside the Blackthorn Pub, 3300 W. 111th St., said Chicago Police Deputy Chief Berscott Ruiz. The gunman was killed and the other man was in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

The confrontation began just before 6:30 p.m. when there was a fight between two patrons at the bar, when one of the two men came around the bar, continued the fight, then shot the other man, Ruiz said.

The sergeant — who Ruiz said witnessed the shooting — drew his service pistol, announced that he was a police officer, and ordered the attacker to drop his weapon, Police News Affairs said in a statement.

The gunman began to fan his gun through the bar, Ruiz said. When the gunman pointed his weapon at other patrons and the sergeant, the sergeant shot him, according to the News Affairs statement. The attacker was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

A weapon was found by police at the scene and no officers were injured in the incident, police said.
