DETROIT — Detroit’s police chief says one of his officers has died in a traffic crash during a training exercise.
Chief James Craig says 25-year-old Officer Darren Weathers died at a hospital following the collision at a Detroit intersection about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Craig says Weathers was alone in his vehicle when it collided with a second vehicle. He says the collision pushed Weathers’ vehicle into a metal pylon, causing extensive damage.
Craig says he didn’t know whether anyone in the other vehicle was injured.
Weathers had been on the force for only 1½ years. He recently received a medal of valor for helping his partner who was shot while the two were on duty together last April.
