Ga. deputy killed while directing traffic on highway

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A deputy who was directing traffic was struck and killed by a motorist Wednesday morning. 

WSBTV.com reported that Deputy Walter Jenkins, with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, was directing traffic at an intersection of a highway when he was struck by a vehicle. Deputies responded to the scene, but Jenkins was unresponsive. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. 

"Last night an angel was called home," the department wrote on Facebook. "Please keep Deputy Jenkins' family and RCSO in your prayers."

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and remained on scene until responders arrived. The crash is under investigation by Georgia State Patrol.
