CHICAGO - Congressman Danny Davis says he’s introducing legislation that would make police torture a federal crime without any statute of limitations.
Davis appeared today at a news conference with several long-time activists to call for more forthright action in response to decades-old allegations of torture by Chicago police.
A special prosecutors report last year found Lieutenant Jon Burge and detectives under his command used torture to coerce confessions. But it concluded too much time had elapsed to prosecute those involved.
Speaking with Davis in Chicago, activists argued there’s a way to pursue prosecutions because they contend a conspiracy continues to cover up facts of the torture.
Cook County Commissioner Earlean Collins says the county board will hold a hearing on the torture issue Wednesday.
