Veteran Ohio officer resigns after DUI arrest

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron police detective, a 14-year veteran of the department, has resigned following a DUI stop.

Akron Police Chief Michael Matulavich said Det. Kris Hanzel was stopped by Akron police Thursday evening after he was seen driving erratically.

Hanzel was taken into custody and offered a Breathalyzer test, which he refused. He also refused additional testing for drugs.

On Friday, Hanzel resigned and turned in his badge.

Matulavich said that Hanzel was off duty when he was stopped for driving erratically.

The chief had no further comment.
