ST. LOUIS — Two Missouri Highway Patrolmen were injured when their cruiser was struck from behind on Interstate 70 near 270 early Sunday.

Both troopers were taken to two hospitals, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to Missouri Highway Patrol trooper Al Nothum, spokesman for the patrol.

Nothum said the troopers drove to the site and one trooper got into the other trooper’s cruiser to have a discussion. They had driven far off the road onto the shoulder, Nothum said. A tractor trailer struck the rear of the cruiser that the troopers were sitting in. Both cruisers were completely demolished. After hitting the cruisers, the tractor trailer overturned, causing a blockage eastbound on Interstate 70.

Nothum did not know the condition of the tractor trailer driver, but said the injuries were not considered serious.

“We are trying to determine why the tractor trailer left the road and struck them,” he said.
