JACKSON, Miss. — A Mississippi police recruit died suddenly on Monday while training at a police academy.

City officials in Jackson said a recruit died while at the city training academy, WJTV reported.

“Our hearts go out to this young man’s family and members of his recruiting class during this difficult time,” said Jackson Police Chief James Davis in a Facebook post.

The Jackson Police Department requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Training at the Jackson Training Academy has been suspended, and grief counselors have been called in.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts break for this young man, his family and the JPD/JFD communities,” said Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba. “We wish his family love and strength as they deal with this unimaginable loss.”

City officials said the recruit was also a former firefighter with the Jackson Fire Department, WAPT reported.

The cause and nature of death, and the identity of the recruit, have not been released.
