According to a New Jersey Star-Ledger article, 19-year-old Rasul McNeil-Thomas pleaded not guilty this morning to murder, aggravated assault, carjacking, and weapons offenses. The teen faces charges related to the death of off-duty Newark police officer William Johnson, who was shot while ordering pizza on May 26.
Police have stated that Officer Johnson was not the intended target of McNeil-Thomas’ fire, though this person has not been identified. Inside the restaurant, a man and a woman were also shot, but survived.
Johnson died early the next morning, and McNeil-Thomas was arrested later that day. The second suspect involved in the shootings remains to be arrested.
