SUGAR LAND, Texas — A Texas police officer is in critical condition after his cruiser was struck while the officer was investigating a separate crash.
On Sunday, Sugar Land Police Officer Ruben Munoz was responding to a single-vehicle crash just before 2 a.m., reported Click 2 Houston. That driver was taken away for a sobriety test by other officers while Munoz stayed behind in his cruiser to block the investigation scene. That’s when a pickup truck struck the back of his squad car. Moments later, a Jeep struck the pickup. Munoz, the driver of the Jeep and the driver of the pickup were all taken to the hospital.
As of Monday, Munoz and the Jeep’s driver were in critical condition, according to the report. The pickup driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“We are praying for the officer, we are praying for our entire police officer family,” Chief Eric Robins told Click 2 Houston. “It is a tragedy when something like this happens. It is obvious that there’s some potential substance involved whether it’s alcohol or something else.”
The investigation is ongoing.
