CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Steven Ruebelmann was greeted with a standing ovation hours after leaving the hospital.
Corpus Christi police and cadets stood for Ruebelmann, the second of three officers shot serving a warrant to be released from the hospital, during a graduation ceremony Friday.
His presence was quickly noted by police Chief Floyd Simpson.
“Today you become police officers,” Simpson said to cadets. “Is it simple? No. Ask Steven.”
Ruebelmann was released from Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial at about 11 a.m. Friday. He received two gunshot wounds — one to a wrist, another to a hand.
He was one of three SWAT officers shot Thursday morning during a raid on a suspected drug house in the 3000 block of Churchill Drive.
Simpson has said the officers were executing a warrant but that people inside the house opened fire as police entered the home.
Officer Andrew Jordan, who was shot in the upper portion of one of his legs and a forearm, remains hospitalized. Jordan has been with the department for four years.
Steven Brown, an officer with Corpus Christi police for two years, suffered a wound to his right calf. He was released Thursday.
Ray Rosas, 46, was arrested on suspicion of three counts of attempted capital murder. Public records indicate Rosas lives in the home.
Rosas appeared in front of 148th District Judge Guy Williams on Friday and was appointed two attorneys.
More details about what was seized from the house also were released by police Friday.
Detectives with the department’s narcotics unit executed a search warrant at the house Thursday afternoon after investigators completed their examination of the crime scene following the shooting.
Narcotics officers seized less than an ounce of powdered cocaine, about an ounce of crack cocaine, Alprazolam, Tramadol, and less than half an ounce of marijuana. They also confiscated more than $600 in cash.
Officers arrested 30-year-old Santiago Garcia on suspicion of manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of dangerous drugs, according to a police news release.
Code Enforcement also responded and found the home was illegally taking water and the utilities enforcement disconnected the water meter. The Gas Department also shut off the natural gas supply and removed the gas meter to the home after it was discovered gas was being stolen. The electrical system at the home was deemed to be dangerous and AEP removed the electrical meter.
Code Enforcement is also opening a case to investigate the substandard structure at the home, the news release states.
Rosas and Garcia remained in the Nueces County Jail on Friday. Rosas is jailed in lieu of $1.5 million bail and Garcia’s is $79,500.
