Colo. officer critically injured after exchanging fire with suspect

FORT LUPTON, Colo. — A Fort Lupton police officer and a suspect who fired on him are are both in critical condition after police responded to a report of an armed person Monday night.

Fort Lupton Police Department officers responded to the report of an armed person along the 200 block of Ponderosa Place at 10:40 p.m., according to a 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team press release.

At the scene, officers received information about a suspect with a gun who was attempting to contact someone at a home in the area.

As officers approached the residence a man began firing on them. Police returned fire and the suspect was shot.

The officer and the suspect were both taken by helicopter to area hospitals.

The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is handling the investigation.
