BAY CITY, Mich. — An officer was shot in a gunfire exchange with a suspect early Monday while investigating a home invasion.

MLive reports officers responded to the call of a home invasion after a resident was awoken by the suspect, who fled the scene after being confronted.

After police arrived, 14-year-veteran Officer Brandon Murphy tracked footprints in the snow and spotted the suspect, who opened fire and struck Murphy in the left thigh.

Murphy managed to return fire and hit the suspect multiple times, according to the report.

The suspect is currently in critical condition. Murphy is expected to recover.

“He’s a highly decorated officer and he, in my opinion, performed admirably in a very stressful situation,” Bay City Public Safety Director Michael J. Cecchini told MLive. “He was shot and he was able to stay composed and return fire to an individual who was trying to cause great harm to him. I believe all of his training and officer survival skills kicked in to have him respond to that threat the way he did. I’m very happy that he’s going to be OK.”

Police are currently investigating the shooting.
