UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. — An officer was shot and a woman was killed Monday in an incident near the Ferguson protests.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch, officers in University City were shot at after responding to a reported home invasion.

The gunman broke into his mother’s home and shot her in the leg before police arrived.

As police responded and the gunman opened fire, a five-year-veteran officer was struck in the chest.

Police returned gunfire as the suspect fled. It is not known if the gunman, who is currently on the run, was hit by the officers’ return fire.

The woman and officer were both transported to a hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead. The officer is in serious condition, according to the report.

Officials say they do not believe the incident, which occurred near the Ferguson protests, was tied to the violence following the grand jury’s announcement that Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson would not be charged in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown.
