ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A New Jersey police department released body cam footage of a man who stabbed an officer with a knife.

On June 22, Atlantic City police responded to a hit-and-run crash that resulted in injuries when a man identified as 32-year-old Timothy Deal, who wasn’t involved in the crash, approached police, NBC Philadelphia reported.

The video shows officers telling Deal to drop the knife. The suspect then lunges at an officer with the knife before getting shot.

Deal was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the officer was stabbed before he shot Deal. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released.

“We must not lose sight of the fact that a sworn police officer reported to the scene of an accident to protect the public, and was attacked for no apparent reason,” Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said. “The officer defended himself and protected the public from untold harm.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
