ROY CITY, Utah — Police released body camera footage Friday of a fatal shooting outside a convenience store.
Two officers responded to the call on Feb. 21. A store clerk reported that Nicolas Sanchez was loitering and “acting suspiciously” outside the store, ABC News reported. Reports said Sanchez left his car running in the parking lot while he was inside the store.
The unnamed officers approached Sanchez and began questioning him. The police department’s attorney, Heather White, told ABC that there had been an increase in violent incidents at area gas stations.
In the video, Sanchez can be seen lifting his hoodie multiple times. One officer spotted Sanchez’s gun and ordered the suspect not to reach for it. A struggle breaks out between Sanchez and an officer, then gunfire is heard.
According to Good4Utah.com, Sanchez’s gun was involved in the struggle and the officer’s gun was in his holster. White said Sanchez’s gun was the weapon that was fired. The second officer also fired multiple shots during the incident.
Sanchez’s friend, Annette Olsen, told Good4Utah.com that Sanchez had a criminal history involving guns and gangs. ABC News reported that as a convicted felon, Sanchez did not have a legal right to possess the firearm.
Following department protocol, the two officers are on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
