Video: Va. police release footage of fatal OIS that sparked protests

Police said the video’s release was to dispel “misinformation and rumor” about the incident

DANVILLE, Va. — A Virginia police department released body cam footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting Tuesday to dispel “misinformation and rumor” about the incident.

Danville police said 25-year-old Juan Jones fled from officers responding to a domestic assault call on Sunday, the Associated Press reports. After ignoring commands to exit his vehicle, Jones backed his car away from officers, pulled into a brush-filled area and got out of the car.

Officers ordered Jones to show his hands, which he ignored. One officer deployed a TASER on Jones, which was ineffective.

Jones quickly “turned on the officers in a threatening manner” while lifting his arms, prompting police to open fire on the suspect. Jones was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to WSET.

Police said no weapons were recovered at the scene. The shooting has prompted protests in the community.

Police Chief Scott Booth urged the public to not rush to conclusions while the investigation continues.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative duty, per policy, and will be identified later this week. The Virginia State Police are leading the investigation.
