SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A man eating at a Popeye’s restaurant shot and killed an armed robber who threatened his family with a gun, reports say.

San Antonio police tell Fox 29 that the suspect, Andres Herrera, 19, walked into the restaurant Wednesday night and approached Carlos Molina, 32, who was at a table with his wife and two children.

Herrera demanded money from Molina, but Molina said he had spent all of his money on the meal and asked if he and his family could leave the restaurant, News 4 San Antonio reports.

Herrera agreed to let them leave and began demanding money from employees, reports say.

However, two more of Molina’s children walked out of the restaurant’s restroom. When Herrera pointed his gun at them, Molina pulled his gun and shot and killed Herrera, reports say.

Molina is a licensed gun owner, Fox 29 reports. Police say they believe Molina fired in defense of his children.

The incident remains under investigation, reports say.
