Cop comforts kid at homicide scene, buys supplies for her dog

Captain Daniel Graves went above and beyond for a 6-year-old girl

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A police captain has come through on a promise he made to a 6-year-old girl he met while investigating a homicide earlier this month.

According to the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, the cop comforted the little girl who was upset by all the police activity on her street. Officers were responding to a homicide August 9 when a disturbance broke out at the scene as friends and family members arrived, police said.

Captain Daniel Graves noticed the young girl, who was with her grandmother and puppy, and struck up a conversation. The girl’s grandmother told Graves the dog needed a doghouse. Graves promised he’d bring a doghouse and pet supplies for the puppy, the agency said.

After trying several stores with no luck, Graves reached out to a local non-profit called Chain of Hope that works to prevent animal neglect. On August 13, Graves returned to the girl’s home with a doghouse and pet supplies as promised.

“You have some police officers out here like the ones that came today with Graves that truly love and care about this community and the kids in this community,” the girl’s grandmother, Loren Troutt, posted on social media afterward. “My heart goes out with a great big thanks for Graves and the corporation that came out with him today, along with the other officers that accompanied him. Thank you all for coming out today to make a difference in my grandchild’s life and mine.”
