CHICAGO — A Gary man was charged Monday with being the lookout as his companion allegedly fatally shot Metra officer Thomas Cook at the Harvey rail station parking lot about two years ago.
Jeremy T. Lloyd, 20, who also has a Harvey address, was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bail.
Lloyd and another man, who has not been charged, allegedly wanted Cook’s gun, said Joe Kosman, an assistant state’s attorney. The gunman later traded Cook’s stolen .357-caliber service weapon for another handgun, Kosman said, adding that Cook’s gun was recovered in Robbins.
After the shooting, Lloyd approached a second witness, told him to watch a news report about Cook’s murder, and admitted to being present when Cook, 43, of Dyer, Ind., was killed, Kosman added.
Bob Cook, Cook’s brother and a county sheriff deputy, said of Lloyd’s arrest: “We’re happy it’s gotten to this point.”
“We felt frustrated because we didn’t know what’s going on,” Cook added.
Lloyd and the gunman -- identified in court Monday as “Individual A,” were named in connection with an earlier shooting involving Harvey officer Alex Gbur, who was unharmed, Kosman said. The Cook and Gbur incidents both took place Sept. 27, 2006.
Witnesses said they saw Lloyd and another man running from the murder scene.
