Deputies save little league game after umpire fails to show

The game would have been cancelled if they hadn’t stepped up to the plate

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. — Two deputies stepped up to the plate and saved a little league game after an umpire failed to show up.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies happened to be at the park when Coach Vincent Marsello asked them to step in so the game wouldn’t be canceled, Fox 10 reported.

“I walked over to him and said ‘Officer, do you have body armor on?’ He said yes, and I said, ‘Good, now you can be our umpire,’” Marsello said.

The team was in luck because one of the deputies played semi-professional baseball before joining law enforcement. Both officers jumped right in with their full uniforms on. They even gave the kids some baseball pointers.

“He did a better job as a volunteer than some of the pro officials we’ve had. I can’t thank them enough,” Marsello said.
