LA PLATA, Md. – A Maryland officer went above and beyond the call of duty for a young girl in need of help.

The girl, Evie, left some of her favorite toys in her front yard Sunday as she headed off to bed. The next morning, they were gone.

A suspect was captured on surveillance video stealing the toys – a plastic dragon and a plastic dinosaur – from the front yard. Evie’s family posted a plea on social media for help recovering the toys, which caught the attention of La Plata Sgt. Robert Bagley, according to Fox 5.

It was the start of an epic, heartwarming journey that would end in a newfound friendship between the sergeant and the plastic dragon.

Bagley took photos of his work on the case. He quickly recovered the dragon and realized it needed immediate medical attention. With the help of some of Bagley’s friends at a local hospital, the dragon was quickly on the mend.

“Please tell your daughter that this fella was safe with me all night. I found him alone with a broken arm, so I took him to my emergency room friends at Charles Regional Medical Center. They were kind enough to fix his boo boo,” Bagley said, according to the report.

Bagley, along with his new dragon partner, then documented their search far and wide for the other missing toy – even enlisting the help of local firefighters.

Impressed by the dragon’s crime-fighting skills, Bagley deputized him and the pair worked traffic enforcement and took some dispatch calls. After a long day, they searched for dinner, eventually landing on donuts, of course.

Although Bagley could not locate Evie’s other toy, she was ecstatic to be reunited with her dragon.

“Please tell your daughter that he was a great partner tonight,” Bagley wrote to Evie’s father. “He kept me safe while patrolling the Town of La Plata. We will continue to look for his other missing friend. Sincerely, Sgt. Bobby Bagley.”
