KANSAS CITY, Mo. — late night standoff at a house in the 3800 block of East 35th Street ended with a man killing himself.
The man, who police have not identified, had abducted a woman at gunpoint from the Gates Restaurant at 1221 Brooklyn Avenue around 11:15 p.m. Sunday. He also shot the woman but her injury was not life-threatening.
Kansas City Police Sgt. Tony Sanders said police went to the house after witnesses to the abduction gave officers a description of the man, the vehicle he was driving and its license plate number.
Police traced the license number to the address on East 35th Street and found the same vehicle described by the witnesses in the driveway.
As officers approached the house, a woman who matched the witnesses’ description of the abduction victim ran outside and told officers that she had just been shot.
Officers then saw the man who matched the witnesses’ description of the armed abductor come out onto the porch smoking a cigarette. He went back inside. Offices approached the door but heard a gunshot inside the house.
Police began an Operation 100 and tried to contact the man but got no response, Sanders said. Tactical officers eventually entered the house and found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No officers fired their weapons during the standoff, Sanders said.
The woman was treated at a hospital for her injuries.
